The nominations have just been announced for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize but no jazz nominees are in the list this year. Hotly tipped were Sons of Kemet for their album Burn (Naim) who were nominated for best jazz act at the MOBOs last week. The two-drummer/tuba/reeds Count Ossie and Mulatu-influenced livewires released their debut earlier this week. The Kemets have been burning rubber for a while in the underground London jazz clubs at a bunch of memorable shows. Other strong contenders included Courtney Pine’s House of Legends (Destin-E), and Soweto Kinch for The Legend of Mike Smith. Why the judges snubbed the genre is a mystery in a year full of strong releases by British and Irish acts. The nominated artists' albums this year are: Rudimental Home; Foals Holy Fire; Jon Hopkins Immunity; Jake Bugg Jake Bugg; Laura Mvula Sing To The Moon; Villagers Awayland; David Bowie The Next Day; Savages Silence Yourself; Disclosure Settle; Laura Marling Once I Was An Eagle; James Blake Overgrown; and Arctic Monkeys for AM.
