Composer, arranger, trumpeter, and big band leader Gerald Wilson has died at the age of 96. There is an obituary and full details of his career in music in the LA Times. ‘Viva Tirado’ the first track of the Mississippi-born big band man’s Moment of Truth (Pacific jazz) recorded in 1962, first released the following year, can be heard above. Wilson’s organisation at the time heard on the LP includes in its number Carmell Jones, Bud Shank, Teddy Edwards, Harold Land, and Mel Lewis. In more recent years Wilson recorded extensively for the Detroit label Mack Avenue.
