A new combination on an album for the first time together as this trio of tenor saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, the Bitches Brew, erstwhile Keith Jarrett standards trio and legendary Charles Lloyd quartet drummer Jack DeJohnette, and bass guitarist Matthew Garrison, son of classic John Coltrane Quartet bassist Jimmy Garrison, on Manfred Eicher-produced ECM studio album In Movement is scheduled for May according to Amazon Germany who are indicating 6 May.

‘Expect the unexpected’: Jack DeJohnette

One track references John Coltrane, Ravi Coltrane’s father, in the inclusion of opener ‘Alabama’ a seminal composition of the saxophonist’s that was a civil rights meditation following an infamous racist bombing in Birmingham, Alabama and which was included on John Coltrane’s 1964-released Live at Birdland; another draws from Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue with the inclusion of Miles & Bill Evans’ ‘Blue In Green’ as well as material dedicated for DeJohnette’s wife, in ‘Lydia’ (a Jack tune also selected for a different version on his new piano album), and for the late-period Coltrane Interstellar Space drummer Rashied Ali, in penultimate track ‘Rashied.’

Jack DeJohnette’s personal website notes: “After years of performance in the United States, Japan and Europe Jack DeJohnette, Ravi Coltrane and Matthew Garrison got together in the studio in October to record a brand new album of original songs and renditions of classics.”

In the video above members of the trio explain their work together and the genesis of the project.
