The next big jazz hope “fresh out of south London” Nérija play Camberwell tonight.

Very much still at the word of mouth stage for the last couple of years the Tomorrow’s Warriors-rooted band is on many people’s must-hear lists. An all-female ‘group’ – the 60s Modern Jazz terminology seems more applicable than ‘band’ given the clear Joe Henderson and Freddie Hubbard influences – mentored in their journey so far by pianist Zoe Rahman, who features on Courtney Pine’s acclaimed new ballads album released earlier this year, Nérija (meaning lamp, or light, of God) features Sheila Maurice-Grey on trumpet; Rosie Turton, trombone; Cassie Kinoshi alto sax; Nubya Garcia tenor-sax; Jazz Jamaica rising star Shirley Tetteh on guitar; Inga Eichler, double bass and Lizy Exell, drums. The gig is the latest in the Jazzlive series at the Crypt.
