Rusconi

Defined by the lexicographers at the Oxford Dictionaries as “a trend in which ordinary, unfashionable clothing is worn as a deliberate fashion statement,” transfer this to jazz not just sartorially but also in terms of tapping modern mainstream piano-trio tastes that aren’t supposed to be state-of-the-idiom but definitely not retro. And yes, Swiss piano trios could be seen, without making too much of a leap of the imagination, as a sort of normcore finishing school. Leading contenders include Rusconi, Vein, Colin Vallon, and Christoph Stiefel’s Inner Language trio.
