Pianist Horace Parlan who has died at the age of 86 was influenced by Ahmad Jamal and Bud Powell. He played in Charles Mingus’ group from 1957-1959 and appears among the personnel on the classic Mingus Ah Um album. He recorded as a leader for Blue Note between 1959 and 1963 and later moved to Denmark, first settling in Copenhagen. His 1960 trio album Us Three decades on lent its name to inspire Geoff Wilkinson and Mel Simpson’s 1990s acid jazz Blue Note sampling phenomenon Us3. Link to news (Danish) and Nate Chinen tribute
