Featuring a calmly moving take on John McLaughlin and the absorbing ultimately cathartic resolution of Tony Williams, Wake Up Call is the new studio album from the very fine Freddie Hubbard-inspired trumpeter David Weiss to be released in mid-February. Last heard from Weiss was the tender and beautiful When Words Fail. With the American, who besides trumpet also plays Fender Rhodes electric piano on two tracks, are the tenorist Myron Walden on the majority of the nine tracks. The great JD Allen also on tenor is on three. Several guitarists are on the record: Ben Eunson is on several tracks as is his fellow guitarist Travis Reuter on others; while the great new hero of American jazz guitar Nir Felder, heard live by marlbank in Logan Richardson’s band last year, appears on certain tracks. Matt Clohesy is the bassist throughout. Kush Abadey is the album drummer. Listen, above
