Released at the end of July, anyone who is interested in the future of jazz piano will want to get Punch, a new studio album and the latest from the super talented 25-year-old pianist Elliot Galvin recorded in a Berlin studio at the end of 2015. Listen to a track from the album, above.

Two years and a label change later following on from the stimulating Chaos Collective album Dreamland, this new one retains the same trio (Galvin with bassist Tom McCredie and drummer Simon Roth), and as before there’s an edgy sense of anarchy at play and above all a huge amount of invention unleashed complete with the help, among other effects, of a handy stylophone as you can make out above in that weird slithery scratchy noise sliding out at the beginning, Galvin goading his trio into conjuring up tales of the unexpected on an album comprised largely of his own tunes plus a take on ‘Mack the Knife.’
