An Oscar hopeful this year for best film and opening in UK and Irish cinemas this week leading jazz pianist Jason Moran scored the soundtrack for Ava DuVernay’s civil rights era movie Selma a film about Martin Luther King Jr’s push to pass the voting rights act in Alabama. Moran told Billboard: “Music gets in the way of most films. I was trying to be conscious of how we wanted our audience to exit the theatre – angry, settled or unsettled – but to give them enough hope so they leave positive.” Moran’s most recent album was the Fats Waller-themed All Rise reviewed here
