Horace Silver

Hard bop innovator pianist Horace Silver has died. A founder of the Jazz Messengers and remembered for ‘Song For My Father’, ‘Filthy McNasty’, and ‘Sister Sadie’, among a string of classic compositions recorded during the heyday of the Blue Note label, Silver was 85. According to NPR, citing Silver’s song Gregory, Silver died earlier today.
Blue Note records has posted a tribute on the label’s website expressing the company’s deep sadness at the passing of one of its most revered sons. As the label puts it: “Join us in paying tribute to this musical giant who gave the world so much. Rest in 'Peace' Mr. Silver!”
