A double CD documenting guitarist Baden Powell’s last concert recorded in 2000 in Berlin’s Volksbühne not long before the Brazilian’s death.

Bookended by Baden Powell compositions ‘Vento vadio instrumental’ and ‘Marcha Escocesa instrumental’ you’ll find Jobim, Pixinguinha, Luiz Bonfá material and even a Bach Tocata thrown in for good measure.

Deceptively gentle on one level nonetheless there’s plenty of grit and sinuous dexterity to the Baden Powell method in these solo performances the layers of complex improvisational textures drawn out on his solo flourishes often enhanced by his heartfelt and sometimes fragile-sounding vocals. Nicely packaged by MPS, the sound is pristine and intimate.

Released on 23 October. An extract from the concert is above. A DVD of the concert is also available as well as the CD & vinyl issues.
