Launching Original Flavours (Double Scoop Records ***1/2) at the 100 Club on Oxford Street in London tonight this new album from jump jive veteran Ray Gelato and the Giants, the tenor saxist/singer a fixture on the UK swing and jazz scene since the late-1980s coming out of a Louis Jordan and Louis Prima space. All the songs on this latest release are Gelato’s own apart from Peter Tomasso’s ‘Mambo Gelato’ and a Gelato/Lenny Lawrence co-write ‘Smoke It.’

The video for opener ‘Get off the Phone’ is above. Songs include an affectionate tribute to Bar Italia, the famous coffee shop across the street from Ronnie Scott’s in Soho, Gelato’s warm voice welcoming and inviting. Definitely party-time when Gelato and the gang are about live or on record. SG
