Paul Edis

The mournful trumpet sound of Graham Hardy opens this three-horn sextet affair, one that follows on from 2013’s There Will Be Time. The title track itself, second number in, has a louche moment-he-walked-in-the-joint kind of feel to it, drummer Adam Sinclair marshalling strict time before the trombone of Chris Hibbard eventually takes up the running. Third track ‘Eastern’ is more impressionistic melding classical music with jazz flavours, while ‘Knight Errant’ has an Hispanic feel to it at the beginning. All the compositions are pianist Edis’, fanning out from a modern-mainstream and hard bop core, the tender ballad ‘Missing You’ perhaps the highlight, the album recorded in Newcastle upon Tyne last October.

The Paul Edis sextet play the Georgian Theatre Royal, Richmond, North Yorkshire tonight, Lancaster Jazz Festival on 20 September, and launch the album at the Sage in Gateshead on 25 September, with more dates to follow.
