In the pantheon of avant garde-inclined saxophonists to display their sheer artistry on the British scene from the beginning of free-jazz, or free form as Joe Harriott called it, few besides Harriott himself came to be as highly regarded as Mike Osborne.

An archival release from the altoist, who died in 2007, is released next month, Dawn, according to reissuing label Cuneiform finding Osborne in his earliest session as a co-leader along with John Surman of a quartet in 1966 and then four years later keeping playing company with bassist Harry Miller and drummer Louis Moholo who he would also make the albums Bordercrossing and All Night Long with. Listen to Osborne’s original composition ‘An Idea’ from Dawn, above.
