But beautiful: bassist Barry Guy, pianist Marilyn Crispell and drummer Paul Lytton have released records before and know each other’s methods intimately. Yet there is no feeling that this is about process. 

There’s real emotion and no compromise here peeling out from within the abstractions, the compositions inspired by the distinguished painter Hughie O’Donoghue, and there is an exactness in each player’s role, the sum of the parts much more than the delicate lines of just three players. Above all Deep Memory opens the music up and lets it breathe beyond harmony, beyond constraint.
