There is so much maturity and change in the air here in this slice of Ask, Seek, Knock new from Samuel Eagles this summer to be released with all the sevens in mind this July, 7/7/17 sharing release day with Evan Parker’s epic Coltranian meditation already announced. Switching labels Eagles has made incremental change for his new band set-up although retaining the colours and modal moods laid on by award winning vibist Ralph Wyld familiar from the alto saxophonist’s debut Next Beginning back in 2014 and enhancing the friends and family theme in introducing the presence of Eagles’ tenor sax playing brother Duncan. Duncan’s Partikel connection is reinforced by the presence of bassist Max Luthert. But the Partikel drummer Eric Ford has departed and instead this time around Dave Hamblett has entered the frame. Also fresh to the sound of the newly monikered Spirit is the elegiac touch of pianist Sam Leak probably the biggest change of all as there was no piano involved on the earlier quartet record and this beefs up the texture and adds piquancy for the listener besides the soothe of vibes. Heavyweight tenorist Jean Toussaint, a justifiable legend of the London music college scene, former Jazz Messenger and teacher of Sam Eagles, guests on a few tracks, the album itself recorded in Real World, an equally distinguished studio. Eagles sounds more in the Lee Konitz mould than ever and that suits his new label Whirlwind fine, as the prevailing sound there is rooted in adventurous bebop with the emphasis on probing a sense of chordal adventure rooted in the tradition from Cool to the very outer limits.
